The Pwani Leather House
The Pwani Leather House is a dream that came to reality in 2022 where two sisters,Dr. Bigen Al-Ghaafiry(23) and Ambassador Princess Shameem Al-Ghaafiry (17), thought of restoring and resurrecting the Swahili culture which is dying a slow death as it is eroded with the modern world. This dream is all about DNA. It is inspired by the old saying that goes, blood is thicker than water. Indeed it is, it’s stronger.
Their paternal ancestors originate from Oman, a tribe known as Al-Ghaafiry who’s clan historically conquered the Eastern Africa’s coastal strip back in the 18th century. It captured important towns all the way from the Horn of Africa in the North to Ruvuma river in the South. These towns were then transformed into trade centers where trade took place between the locals and the Omani Arabs. They include Pate, Malindi, Mombasa, Pemba and Zanzibar.
This initiative is boosted by the old Swahili adage that says, “muacha mila ni mtumwa”, he who abandons his culture is a slave. With this, The Pwani Leather House works round the clock to make sure you get the best innovative products possible which are environmental friendly and grounded in our Swahili culture and heritage.
Currently,Dr. Bigen is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Health Records and Information Management in Kenya where as Ambassador Princess Shameem is pursuing her Bachelor of Laws, LLB,as an advocate in Malaysia.With them being the Directors,they decided to employ two reliable people to run the company under their supervision so that they can balance between their business and their studies.
Apart from their courses,it’s their desire to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and all the way to PhD level of the same with an aim of empowering women of their generation in the world on how to run a business.
With this and through hard work together with determination, patience, perseverance, skills and understanding the market we, The Pwani Leather House, aims at doing wonders in terms of business.

Made for men, women, and children, our artisan and talented craftsmen convert leather into beautiful, well-designed sandals, some Swahili beaded and woven into intricate designs with vibrant colors for quality and durability. TPLH sandals are known for comfort. They can be worn with anything, anytime, as they complement any outfit.

Our Aim:
Since there is a need for the new generation to see the beauty left behind for them, TPLH is here to take you back to before the 18th century, when a large population were craftsmen. The Pwani Leather House aims to restore the Swahili culture through traditional craftsmanship by producing products that are 100% pure leather, lovingly handcrafted from readily available materials.
Short-Term Goal:
To give back to the community. This is done by sourcing 100% of the necessary raw materials from the locals, thus promoting local trade and providing the locals with income. Additionally, TPLH employs 100% of its workers from local communities, showcasing their excellent and unique skills. This not only improves their lives as a source of income but also preserves their craftsmanship.
Long-Term Goal:
To make Africa and the world at large recognize and appreciate the Swahili people through a beautiful display of their rich culture and heritage.
